Japanese Citizen Watch Movement - 0020/0021
Here today is the Citizen calibre 0201, why? because it spawned many other movements and, it is quite hard to find in its original form.
The humble 0200 Family of Movements has seen many variations: 17, 19 & 21 jewel manual movements (later due to cost cutting some 7 jewel examples can be found). The large Glucydur balance with parashock protection, traditional design with direct driven centre second and centre minute wheel, makes this entry level movement running at 18,000 bph an interesting piece. It is hardwearing and robust.
Originally designed for an automated assembly line with accuracy of +/- 40 sec a day and production ran from 1960-1980. The 0201 lineage can be seen in many movements in the Citizen family. Some of the literature is a little confusing as it tends to sidestep the movements in favour of more aesthetic considerations.
By 1973 the original Homer moniker had been dropped and the 0201 found its way into different models including the Newmaster (another simple manual wind watch using the calibre 1802 – a 0200 variant).
Perhaps the more interesting aspect of the 0201 was its Indian connection. The HMT calibre 020 is a Citizen 0201 made in India with 17 Jewel movement under licence by the Hindustan Machine Tools Ltd.
